Fire teacher dude: roll a potato over those embers, and try to explain that it’s the mental state of the spud that doesn’t burn it.

I didn’t mean go and do stupid things like jumping off a cliff, I meant to push yourself to do something more risky just because you “walked on fire”. People go cliff diving all the time (among many other dangerous activities), but if you’re going to say to yourself that you can go a little bit higher this time, or try this new place where nobody dares to go simply because you “believe” that you can, THAT is dangerous. People need to know the reality of the world to know their limits.

You can look at it a bunch of different ways. But I doubt walking across fire will make you dumb enough to jump off of a cliff. Fear can be a good thing, and a curse. Too much, and your life will be controlled by it. Too little, and your life may end.

I disagree with you. What if you do something that you may regret? Hey, I bet I could cliff dive from this height, or I bet I could hold my breadth a bit longer on this free dive, or I bet i could race this guy and beat him without getting hurt….there is such thing as going over the edge, and many people go too far from making mistakes. It’s best that people are given the straight facts, as much knowledge as possible to make the best decisions or else mistakes are made.

Yes, I totally agree. People do need motivation in order to help them do things they otherwise wouldn’t do.
I only have a problem when people make things seem somthing they are not. Otherwise have fun!

  6. EnigmaHood says:

Well look, if the intention is to just be more motivated and brave to do things then there’s no problem with it really. Yeah, it’s all physics and you won’t get burned, but you also won’t get burned for asking a girl out on a date, but you still might not do it because you aren’t brave enough. If walking on fire makes you more courageous to do other things, then more power to you.

This firewalking teacher, or whatever he calls himself, says it’s your mind lowering the temperature of the feet, blah, blah,

He can test his theory if he commands his brain to lower the temperature of his cheeks, and setting a hot coal on them. If he doesn’t scream, it will be proved.

Or just ask him to step on the coals without moving for a whole minute.

I’d burn my feet if I stepped on that shit, I have stepped on that shit…it burns. lol

If someone thought they where gonna be burned when they stepped on it, they probably would.

This has been proven, in a test they put a man under hypnosis gave him an ice cube and told him it was a hot coal. his skin acutely burned.

    This is all BS!
If it’s mental state then forget about the coals and wood embers. I want you to walk on a SMOOTH and SHINY solid steel surface that is showing the same 1000 F temperature as your coals.
But we all know that nobody is stupid enough to do this. And this alone PROVES that the mental hype is just BS!!!

It can be tested in a less ethical way. Use materials that ARE good conductors of heat and convince people that they won’t get burned. Have material at same temperature, same area to walk through, same mental preparation, and previous success in traditional fire walking. Have them attempt it. See them injured badly.

Bald egghead it has nothing to do with positive thinking. I did it too when i was young it hurt a little but I didnt burn myself the fast walking and the ‘intensity’ of the heat is much less than a flame of that degrees

“….as soon as you walk into the fire with a belief that you’re not going to burn your feet, you are in a different physiological state than the person who thinks they’re gonna get burned!”

Easy to claim and non-falsifiable, because, honestly: Who’s going to attempt this if they DO think they’re gonna get burned???

If all they have to do to overcome being burned by the hot coals is to “think they can do it” then they should be able to walk over 1000 degree steel if they are in the correct mental state also, right? LOLOLOL

LOLOLOL whatever you say true believer. Why don’t these people walk on a 1000 degree solid steel plate after they have the “correct mental state”? Lets see what happens then.

nomineZERO, Your friend probably burned his feet because it wasn’t as controlled of setup. In these programs they spread the coals out very evenly (and thinly, if you will) so as not to burn your feet. The moral here is there will NEVER be two people who walk on the same bed of fire where one gets burned badly and the other is fine because of mental preparation…This would surely be the proof that skeptics have yet to encounter.

The Leidenfrost effect is in regards to droplets. This is a surface area of flesh. I have stepped on hot coals by accident, and burned the crap out of myself. Shermer is no better than a religious fanatic, except his religion is “scientific” skepticism.

When I was studying physics in college I was browsing through a book in the library on thermal dynamics. I remember a chapter involving thermal conductivity and they included a picture of people running on coals. It is basic elementary physics.

I think Shermer is a bit wrong here, but on the other side, it’s all in all a bit weird storry.

I think Shermer was pretty sure of himself after he saw the other going over the fire, and thought, I can do it also if the others can…

But in the other hand… The brother of my girlfriend tried this at home… Well…, he got in hospital cause of that…
